North Bengal Science Centre 

Science city is located 5 km north of the Siliguri city. Situated in the Matigara alongside the National Highway 31, this is also popular as the North Bengal Science Centre. The centre exhibits a wide range of scientific projects and equipment. Different astronomical shows are also conducted in the planetarium here. The Science city has also become the most frequented place for the educational tours. Gadgets housed at the centre bring forth the basic scientific principles in a very simple and interesting manner thereby making learning science a lot more fun. Most experiments conducted here relate to the everyday life science. It also displays the biodiversity and the different flora and fauna of the Siliguri city.

Historical Context: It is one of the largest science centre in the world, and is developed by the National Council of Science Museums.

Nehru Museum of Science and Technology

 The Nehru Museum of Science and Technology is a museum in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. It was founded in 1990 at the Hijli Detention camp building, later the IIT-Kharagpur Heritage Building, which is now named as Hijli Saheed Bhavan. The imposing building, bearing resemblance to the Byzantine style of architecture, was used by the British rulers of India to detain the freedom fighters during the 1930s.

Nehru Museum of Science and Technology

Although there were few other detention camps around the country in those days, the Hijli detention camp was the only one to witness the death of two detainees by police firing within jail compound. The incident led to strong protest, to register their indignation by prominent national figures like Rabindranath Tagore, Subhas Chandra Bose and many others. Soon after independence, the building was used to house the first Indian Institute of Technology (known initially as the Higher Technical Institute).

The museum has many indoor exhibits which include technical models collected from various institutes and organisations across India. The park outside the museum contains 14 open-air demonstrations and outdoor exhibits including a hunter plane, and a steam engine. The museum has an archive room showcasing documents relating to history of the institute and Midnapore district.

The Nehru Museum of Science & Technology completed 25 years of its existence in 2016. In keeping with the spirit, a museum development fund received from the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, was utilized to renovate some of the galleries of the Museum. Though this work is still ongoing, a section of the museum has been attractively renovated with the help of the National Council of Science Museums and is drawing a large crowd of visitors each day since its opening in September 2014. The Science City, one of its kind in India, inaugurated on 1st July,1997 has been developed as a major attraction for the residents’ of Kolkata as well as for the national and international visitors to the metropolis. Developed by the National Council of Science Museums, it is one of the largest and finest in the world, presenting science and technology in a stimulating and engaging environment that is truly educational and enjoyable for the people of all ages. It has, over the years, become a place for memorable experience and enjoyment for both the young and the old.  It is located at the crossing of Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and J. B. S. Haldane Avenue (Parama Island) in East Topsia. Saroj Ghose.

The 5400 square metres new building is opened in 2016 with the latest infrastructure and provides an enquiry based learning to the visitors. 

Space Theatre : 

Fulldome3D Digital Theatre was inaugurated by Dr. Mahesh Sharma, Hon’ble Union Minister of Culture, Govt. of India at Science City, Kolkata. The facility is the first of its kind in India. In tune with the technological advancement taking place around the world, the Space Theatre has now switched over from a 2D celluloid based film projection system to a digital projection system as part of upgradation fully funded by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India at a cost of Rs. 20.00 crore. This promises to scale up the viewing experience in terms of both content as well as technology by including a completely new full dome with an active 2D/3D immersive projection system.

Preview of two Films ‘The Life of Trees’ and ‘Asteroid: Mission Extreme’ were also organised.

Evolution of life - A Dark Ride 

It comprises 56 robotic animal models divided into seven sections to showcase the milestone events of evolution of life and representative life forms of respective eras. Visitors shall be taken in a slow moving electric car for this immersive experience supplemented by special light and sound effects. Each section is introduced to the visitors through a special audio-video presentation created with the help of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery).

 

Digital Panorama : 

Being the first of its kind in the world, it depicts the important milestones during the last 6 million years of human evolution. The show starts with a static panoramic image of size 10 m x 122 m showcasing important events of human evolution. This is followed by a twelve minutes dynamic film with voice over in 3 languages on human evolution, projected on a giant cylindrical screen with the help of eight powerful digital projectors, that contains actual shoot from South Africa and India merged with photorealistic computer generated 3D images.

Dynamotion Hall : 

Hands-on and interactive exhibits on various topics of science encouraging visitors to experience with props and enjoy the underlying scientific principles. 

Illusions : A permanent exhibition on the world of illusions with interactive exhibits, explores how motion and placement make a different in the visual perception. 

Power of Ten: 43 exhibits unfold the smallest or the biggest of the universe through zooming in or out in the order of ten.: 

Fresh Water Aquarium : Variety of fresh water fishes in 26 tanks; provide the bio-diversity of the fish species.

Live Butterfly Enclave : A colony of live butterflies hatched here and screening of a film Rang Bahari Prajapati on life cycle of butterfly.

Science On a Sphere : The spherical projection system created by NOAA. Each show of 30 minutes duration for around 70 people at a time.

 Earth Exploration Hall

 A permanent exhibition on earth is housed in a two storied hemispherical building that displays the details of the southern hemisphere in the ground floor and northern hemisphere in the first floor. Slicing a huge earth globe at the centre of the hall into 12 segments vertically in each hemisphere, important features of each segment such as physical geography, lands and people, flora and fauna and other dynamic natural phenomenon on earth have been highlighted around the central globe with the modern display technologies such as attractive visuals, interactive multimedia, video walls, panoramic videos, tilting tables, computer kiosks and 3-D effects theatre wearing a special Polaroid spectacle.

Space Odyssey :

Comprising Space Theatre equipped with Helios Star Ball planetarium supported by 150 special effect projectors and Astrovision 10/70 Large format Film Projection system housed in a 23-meter diameter tilted dome having unidirectional seating arrangements for 360 person immersive shows on sciences. 

3-D Vision Theater : A show based on stereo back projection system where visitors experience 3D effect by Polaroid spectacles.

Mirror Magic : There are 35 exhibits based on reflection of light.

Time Machine : 30-seater motion simulator provides virtual experience of space flight or journey into unknown world sitting in a casual maneuvered by hydraulic motion control system.

Maritime Centre : Depicts maritime history of India, artifacts, dioramas and interactive exhibits on shipping and navigation systems. There is an unmanned quiz corner also.

In a tropical country like India, the outdoor is sunny and more inviting than the indoors for most part of the year. In a Science Park, people come closer to plants, animals and other objects in their natural surroundings and also learn about the basic principles of science in an open air learning environment. The park interactive exhibits are engineered so as to tolerate all the weather. Science Park has become the integral part in all the centres of NCSM. It comprises Caterpillar Ride, Gravity Coaster, Musical Fountain, Road Train, Cable Cars, Monorail Cycle, butterfly nursery and several exhibits on physical and life sciences and a maze set up in a lush green ambience. there are many people came in different states.

Grand Theater: 2232 seating capacity main auditorium with stage for 100 performers at a time is the largest auditorium in eastern India.

Mini Auditorium: 392 seating capacity, with stage for 30 performers at a time is ideal for smaller conferences and shows.

Seminar Building: Comprising eleven halls, four with seating capacity of 100 persons, two with seating capacity of 40 persons each, two with seating capacity of 30 persons each, two with seating capacity of 15 persons and a meeting room for 12 persons, is ideal venue for conference, seminars, meeting and workshops.
